Branding a space that’s made for children
Challenge
In 2017, Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo made a monumental move to a new location on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and adopted a new name: John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital. The new, state-of-the-art building was a blank canvas in desperate need of environmental graphics throughout it’s twelve floors that would help the space feel approachable to the young audience that would be entering through it’s doors.
Execution
My goal was to create a colorful and welcoming atmosphere as well as a way-finding tool to help people navigate the new hospital space. Each floor had a designated theme (water, sports, discovery, etc.) and color palette to help visitors navigate each floor. Some of the areas that I branded included waiting rooms, elevator bays, intake spaces, welcome areas, NICU, playrooms, and high-traffic hallways.
I worked closely with a husband and wife illustration team out of Missouri called Pretend Friends over the course of this project. I was solely responsible for concepting, creative directing, and coordinating the production and installation of all the environmental graphics throughout the entire hospital.
